Long days at work can be very testing. When the day ends even the most zen individuals may need a bit of time to unwind. Stress can affect you both mentally and physically which is why it’s so important to learn to disconnect and hit the restart button when you leave work.
Whilst there are more than a few good ways to relax, we’d like to suggest aromatherapy and some of the most popular essential oils and how to use them. As our association with the smell is very powerful. When you inhale a smell, it can trigger memories and evoke emotions that could positively impact your mood at any given time.
1. Chamomile
Chamomile is one of the most well-known essential oils for its ability to relax and calm you. Chamomile tea may come to mind, as typically offered before bed, or an exam to ease any nerves. However, the essential oil can be just as useful. Paired with gentle massaging of the temples and deep breathes Chamomile can balance your mood most effectively.
2. Neroli
Neroli is a tree that can reach 5 to 7 meters high and its leaves are beautifully evergreen all year round. This is a powerful essential oil and thanks to its natural calming effects it can be a great remedy to inhale deeply and swiftly relax your mind. How about pairing this with any one of your favourite hobbies? Welcome the familiar and pleasing act with the sweet citrus smell of neroli and have a great evening.
3. Mandarin
Mandarin has been cultivated for over 3000 years and derives from the evergreen trees in China, Vietnam and Japan. Aside from being claimed to help with detox, anti-inflammatory, and blood circulation benefits, it is also known to aid in calming your mood. We recommend using this essential oil on your way home. Begin to ease your mind from the moment you step out of your place at work, let your body familiarise with the positivity of the simple act of going home.
4. Lavender
Lavender is one of the best and most popular of the essential oils. Coming from the beautiful purple lavender flowers. It has been continuously used for its calming effects and its natural ability to induce relaxation. We recommend this essential oil to be applied one hour before you sleep. The best way to relax and be ready for the next day of work is to maintain a strong sleeping pattern.
5. Yuzu
Japanese Yuzu essential oil is sometimes used as a natural stress relief. It is said that this essential oil can be especially good in suppressing sympathetic nervous system otherwise known as being responsible for your fight or flight response. Learn to handle this response can be a fantastic tool to ease into relaxation. We recommend pairing this smell with some very simple yoga moves to release tension from your shoulders, wrists, back and any other part of your body that may need loosening up.
6. Ylang Ylang
Ylang Ylang essential oil is a sweet floral smell that comes from Southeast Asia. It has been said that Ylang Ylang could even help lower heart rate which is why we think that this would be perfectly paired with a long hot bath, to help you relax before bed.
7. Frankincense
This essential oil is typically sourced from the resin of the Boswellia tree. It holds a powerful sweet woody scent. It’s great to unwind and take your mind to a different place. Which is why we think it’s a great pair for meditation time. Take as long or be as quick as you want, but make sure you deeply inhale this scent and let your mind wander from work and be mindful of your surroundings and your body, as yourself is there something I need? (sleep, water, maybe even a workout to get those endorphins a boost)
8. Bergamot
Bergamot is a citrus fruit. It was originally adopted by the Italians but is now widely used for its said ability to ease tension and anxiety. Because of its strong citrus smell, we recommend this essential oil with a nice hot shower. It’s a great opportunity to refresh and start again.
