Another question we get frequently asked here at Scentered is ‘is it safe to breathe in essential oils?’. The answer is yes it is safe, but even more than that, breathing in essential oils can be good for you. Inhaling essential oils isn’t just pleasant because of their gorgeous scents and aromas they release, but it can actually positively affect your mental and physical wellbeing too.

Essential oils can be used in a multitude of ways, including topically on the skin, on fabrics and diffused into the air. However, inhaling essential oils is arguably the safest method of benefiting from essential oils powerful benefits, and also the fastest way as well.

What happens when you breathe in essential oils?

When you inhale essential oils, the odour molecules trigger thousands of receptors in the olfactory membrane inside your nose. These molecules then travel along the chemo-sensory pathway, immediately triggering the limbic system, also known as the “emotional brain”. This particular area of the brain connects with many other areas of the brain which in turn control bodily functions such as your hormone balance, memory, blood pressure, stress levels, breathing and heart rate. This effect often explains why a certain smell triggers emotions.

Inhaling different essential oils can all have different positive impacts on your physical and emotional wellbeing. For example, certain blends can either help you to FOCUS, to SLEEP WELL, ESCAPE, feel HAPPY, promote LOVE or even DE-STRESS.

Stop - Apply your essential oil infused Balm to your pulse points (neck, wrists and temples) or light your essential oil infused Candle with purpose. As the warmth of the candle melts the wax or as your skin warms up the oils, your room will be filled with mindful meaning and the scents of the oils.
Inhale - Close your eyes and raise either the candle or your wrists to your nose, inhaling deeply as you do. As you inhale, the molecules from the essential oils will trigger your limbic system a.k.a “your emotional brain”. As this happens, visualise the mind state you wish to achieve in this moment.
Reset - Open your eyes, exhale deeply and step into the next moment of your daily journey with purpose.
