I’m sure before now you have heard about the CEO’s who claim the key to their success is waking up early. The pattern is typically that they get a full 7 or 8 hours of sleep a night, but go to bed extremely early and wake up even earlier. Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook and Dolly Parton are just a handful of people who all subscribe to this practice and school of thought. But what is the science of waking up early? Does it really make you more productive? Do you actually get more done during the day? Is there truth in the saying “the early bird catches the worm”?
The time we decide to wake up and get out of bed is the very first decision we make in our day. Making the right decision first thing in the morning will set your day off in the right direction. If you wake up, hit the snooze button 15 times and have to rush through your morning ritual, your day is already off to a stressful and strained start. Maybe there is some truth to the saying “getting out of the wrong side of bed”. Alternatively, you could be the slow starter. Particularly in isolation it is easy to not even set an alarm, and roll out of bed at 12 pm. This slow start might feel relaxing at the time, but doing this every day can leave you feeling tired, sluggish and even less productive. If either of these sounds familiar, tomorrow morning try setting your alarm early and resist the temptation to hit that snooze button. Climb out of your duvet, make your bed and feel the difference in your mood. This sense of accomplishment before you’ve even gotten dressed will set you on the path of productivity that will soon become addictive and carry you through the rest of your day's journey.
When you wake up late, or JUST in time to do everything that needs to get done, you are leaving no room for things you WANT to do. If you leave no additional time in your morning routine you are only focusing on urgent tasks that you do every day i.e. showering, breakfast, getting dressed. This can leave you feeling frazzled and stretched for time. If you have additional time in the morning think of the other tasks you can squeeze into your day? Even if you set your alarm just 30 minutes before you need to be awake during the week, that is an extra 2.5 hours a week which adds up to 10 hours a month! This could be dedicated to something productive or enjoyable such as reading, yoga, fitness, learning or quality time with a loved one. Why not also tackle a few tasks that your future self will thank you for? When you return home from work, instead of being greeted with a mound of laundry and house chores, you can instead focus on you.
Additionally, if you have finished your ‘must do’ tasks during the morning, you are setting yourself up for a peaceful return home from work. You will be greeted by a welcoming home and an evening to look forward to instead of dread. This calm mind state will only help you to settle down earlier and welcome sleep sooner, ready for your early start the next morning.
